Being back in Costa Rica this week has been more emotional than I expected (I know, you probably have whiplash…I just announced we had moved back to the USA and now I’m back in CR? Just here for a few weeks to photograph two weddings then back to the land of the free and the home of the brave :).
If there is any place on the planet that knows how to mix up a perfect morning on a consistent basis, it’s Costa Rica. Every morning is beautiful and tranquil. The sun rises somewhere around 5 am and shines happily down on the singing birds of the tropics. The sky turns shades of blue that you can’t imagine are even natural, and the breeze rustles through tall lime trees. There’s a kind of perfect silence that the whole country seems to respect for a few peaceful hours before the revving engines of ridiculously loud motorcycles and oversized buses take over.
The perfect morning. Everyday…it’s a good way to start the day.
After a month of very hot days (and mornings) back home, I realize how quickly I had forgotten the beauty of mornings here. And so many other things.
It was easy to step away from a life here when going back to Kentucky, a place that has always been home, and where family waits with open arms.
I’m finding, however that the part that isn’t so easy is coming back to this place that has so greatly formed me, and holds so many of my memories (good, bad and hilarious). The place where I met my husband, found a church that felt like home, shed many tears, had many great adventures and made a few lifelong friends. A place that, for so many years has been my desert. A place I’ve been stretched, grown and learned more than I could have imagined.
It’s ironic, really. The first time I left Costa Rica I swore I’d do my best to never step foot in that country again. And boy did God laugh at that :). I’ve been at least 8 times since, and lived here for a year.
Costa Rica, with all her frustrating flaws and breathtaking beauty, will always have a very special spot in my heart.
Here’s a shot from last weekend’s wedding…a perfectly beautiful Costa Rica evening…to match a perfect morning.
