There are days when running a small business can feel like swimming upstream. I certainly didn’t know when decided to dive in full time that I would spend 90% fo my time being a businesswoman and about 10% actually photographing (and that’s probably generous). And don’t get me wrong…it is absolutely one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done. Having to learn about business, marketing, taxes and finances has not been fun (and is so not my forte), but working hard for something then seeing the reward is the most satisfying feeling.
So all of that really was to say that on tough days, I am immensley grateful for clients like Mary who wrote me the sweetest note a few weeks ago. I photographed Mary first for a portrait session of just her, then a few months later, her engagement session! Not long after I photographed her maternity session, then her sweet newborn baby girl. I have loved photographing each of these landmarks in her in her life.
My favorite snippet of her note says:
“Thank you so much for all you’ve done for us – you’ve been there to capture the happiest moments of my life, and I couldn’t be more grateful that your sister gave me your number over a year ago…”
It sits on my desk as a silent reminder of why I do what I do. So that when I’m tired of looking at numbers and contracts, I can be reminded of why it’s all worth it.
