    buen viaje!

the fourth of five

…that’s my place in the family line-up.  I have three older siblings and one younger (who I affectionately refer to as the kid even though he is 23 now).

I learned fairly early on in Spanish that I am the penultima…second to last.  (that usually applies in sports too…)

Last week J and I hit the road for a weeklong trip back to Kentucky.  We have totally dominated that drive.  We know every Starbucks along the way (there are only 3), but since we only believe in stopping once then that’s mostly irrelevant.  We have this road trip down to a science: car snacks and the perfect amount of water to take along for the drive (too much water can hinder our one-stop-in-9-hours rule so we have to limit it), magazines, conversations (inevitably about business) and a little bit of music to mix it up.  J drives while I handle the music/snacks/entertainment front (and take lots of photos to post to Instagram).  We really love our Inc. Magazine…I usually read at least one cover-to-cover out loud and we discuss.

Wow I’m good at getting off topic.

and talking a lot.

Anyways, we went to Kentucky for a week for a business summit!  Sounds so official, right?  My family started a business last year, and this year with all the growth and decisions to be made we decided to try to have quarterly summits where we’d all meet-up in one place and crank through some work.

I know ‘family business’ can have a bad connotation in some circles, however it has been such a blessing for my fam.  It has drawn us closer and given me a newfound respect for my mom and my siblings.  Seeing each one take on business responsibilities has really highlighted our individual strengths and taught us to work even better as a team.  So I’ll try to update on here occasionally what is happening in the Marlowe world…if you haven’t tried our granola then get your booty over to www.marlowegranola.com and order a bag!  Or if you’re in Lexington you can find it at the Good Foods Co-op and the Only in Kentucky store.

Here’s an iPhone pic my mom took while we were all in!  The 5 of us piled into the back of her car (no longer a mini-van) and laughed as we re-lived our younger years in the Big Red van (some day that van will get it’s own blog post).

From left to right: Me, Caton (the kid), Byron, Daniel, Rachael.  Except for Caton and I, everyone else is in reverse birth order.

a sweet reminder

There are days when running a small business can feel like swimming upstream.  I certainly didn’t know when decided to dive in full time that I would spend 90% fo my time being a businesswoman and about 10% actually photographing (and that’s probably generous).  And don’t get me wrong…it is absolutely one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done.  Having to learn about business, marketing, taxes and finances has not been fun (and is so not my forte), but working hard for something then seeing the reward is the most satisfying feeling.

So all of that really was to say that on tough days, I am immensley grateful for clients like Mary who wrote me the sweetest note a few weeks ago.  I photographed Mary first for a portrait session of just her, then a few months later, her engagement session!  Not long after I photographed her maternity session, then her sweet newborn baby girl.  I have loved photographing each of these landmarks in her in her life.

My favorite snippet of her note says:

Thank you so much for all you’ve done for us – you’ve been there to capture the happiest moments of my life, and I couldn’t be more grateful that your sister gave me your number over a year ago…

It sits on my desk as a silent reminder of why I do what I do.  So that when I’m tired of looking at numbers and contracts, I can be reminded of why it’s all worth it.

25…you’re going to be my best year yet

Yesterday I turned 25.  (actually the day before yesterday but I forgot to publish this post)

25!

Birthdays are like personal new years, so I took the opportunity to reflect.

In 25 years I have visited 22 countries, lived in 4, learned to speak another language fluently and studied two others, finished college, and started a business. Actually two (I’m also part of an awesome family business: www.marlowegranola.com )!

And as wonderful as each of those things is, none of it would be worthwhile without the people God has placed in my life; my family, my lifelong friends, and most of all my dear husband.

I am who I am today because of those people, and I can’t imagine life without them.

As I reflect I can’t help but feel immensely blessed by the opportunities I have been given, and most of all the wonderful people in my life.  Even through difficult times, I can look back now and see God’s immense faithfulness, and the loving support of my family and friends…and for that I am so grateful.

So here’s to a new year in a new city…I can’t wait to live out the new adventures that await!

Here are a few Instagram pics from my day!  (if we aren’t already friends on Instagram we should be! My username is: alumbrap)

(I started the day with that amazing blueberry muffin from a friend and ended it with amazing creme brulee with my sweet husband…mmm)

Baby Portraits: Rebeca’s 8 month session

And to finish the grand combination of El Salvador/family posts, we have Rebeca’s 8 month portrait session.

Yes, I do realize that 5 and 8 months aren’t the usual baby portrait times but we have to take advantage of when we see her to do photo shoots!  So, at 5 months we were in ES, and at 8 months Rebeca and her parent’s came to visit us in DC!  We had so much fun traveling (DC to NY to PA to MD to DC), visiting monuments, museums, and of course photographing the babe!

We did the shoot in our lovely apartment, and in the adorable little town of Vienna nearby!

El Salvador Trip: November 2011

This is me catching up on some personal posts…from a long time ago.

Josue and I try to visit El Salvador every six months to see his family, and it is always so sweet.  We are both incredibly close to our families which makes it that much harder to be far away from both!

On all ES visits we generally do the following (in no particular order)

-drink copious amounts of coffee (and come back insanely addicted)

-teach the family a new board/card game

-win said board/card game a lot (or is that just me?)

-eat pupusas (on every possible occasion)

-eat too much fresh fruit (if that is even possible)

-go to the beach

-eat fresh seafood (usually ceviche) on the beach

-drink fresh coconut water (this might be my favorite part)

-take lots of mini-roadtrips (I mean, it only takes 4 hours to cross the whole country…)

So looking back at that list…basically we hang out with family and eat a lot.  That pretty much sums up family time with the Marlowes too!

Here are som photos from our last trip:

My father-in-law is absolutely smitten with Rebeca.  Granted, she is his first grandchild and his baby girl’s baby girl.

Let me tell you, people…he is a new man.  He used to be quiet and reserved.  Until this little one showed up!  I’ve never seen him so crazy happy in all the years I’ve known him!

I love the feel of this picture…there’s something about dusk.

fotografia el salvadorEl Salvador sunsets…are my favorite.
fotografia el salvadorI become the bad guy on ever trip down…you know, the one who makes everyone take an afternoon off, wear coordinating clothes, and do a family photoshoot.  But aren’t they a good looking bunch?
fotografia el salvadorthen we all took turns taking pictures with Rebeca.  no, seriously.  One by one, we all got one with the kid.  In Spanish you  might call her la concentida.  But look at that sweet face!

fotografia el salvadorThe three Galán siblings.  Little fact for you… Galán in Spanish means handsome or galant.  Not a bad last name!

Left to Right: Samuel, Dina, Josué (youngest to oldest).

fotografia el salvadorJ and I are so blessed to both have parents who have incredible marriages.  While we were in ES we celebrated Josué’s parent’s 30th anniversary.  And I love these sweet pictures we got of them! fotografia el salvadora little ES countrysidefotografia el salvadorI think one of the best parts of marriage is getting to adopt a new family…I am seriously blessed.  Not only are my in-laws pretty fantastic, but my grandparent in-laws (is there a word for that?) are awesome.

My mother-in-law’s parents have been married for 56 years and they have been in ministry just as long.  They have incredible hearts, and have accepted me so warmly into the family.  (Though Papa Cristobal sometimes gets confused and calls me Roxana…).

Mama Luisa gives the best hugs of the whole family… she is all of 4 and a half feet tall but boy can she hug!

They are both in their 80′s are in incredible health…they still go to their farm to work their land and bring home all the wonderful fruits and vegetables they harvest.

fotografia el salvador

As it is now public knowledge in the family that I adore coconuts, Papa Cristobal always makes a point to have some for me (well at least, I like to think it’s just for me)!  But cutting open a coconut to get in to the sweet, nutrient dense juice and ‘meat’ is hard work!  And since no one in the Galán family would let me within a mile of a machete…Papa C usually does that too!
fotografia el salvadorwe are so blessed to have such wonderful families and we are already looking forward to our next trip back¡
